How Kansas Got Its Shape
By Julia V.
Well Howdy! Listen as I tell you about the bee-a-utiful state of Kansas. As y'all know, Kansas is almost a perfect rectangle, but it's got an odd corner. Well, that all started with a simple land dispute.
Now Kansas was once a beautiful rectangle like Colorado and Wyoming. But Mr. McLandersburg loved to steal land, of course. Mr. Jack Potter lived in the top right corner of Kansas, and Mr. McLandersburg lived in Missouri. McLandersburg, true to his name, wanted that land.
They each began to devise their own master plan. Mr. Potter was a very poor man, but he spent all his money and built a large, protective wall. Mr. McLandersburg was very very rich, and he bought very, VERY expensive cannons! But as the battle raged on, they each saw a new light.
2 weeks later...
Jack Potter signed the agreement to make his property part of Missouri. And that, my friends, is how Kansas got its shape.
Now that is why. You know, the land is still the Potters', but in Missouri. And again, that is how Kansas got its shape.
